The Symposium on Mines and the Environment is an international event devoted to communicating the latest knowledge as well as sharing experiences to conciliate environmental protection and profitability. This unique event brings together a wide variety of professionals involved in the field of mining and the environment including academic researchers, scientific staff and decision-makers from mining companies, professionals from government agencies and consulting firms, professors and students. Through informative keynote and technical presentations (available in simultaneous translation in French and English), the Symposium provides delegates with actionable knowledge that can be applied to planning, construction and day to day operations. The program focuses on eight main topics: Tailings, underground backfill, waste rocks, policies and regulations, mine water treatment and quality prediction, site reclamation and new trends. The program also includes workshops, a technical plenary session, a trade show, a poster session and mines sites visits. In addition, the symposium provides ample opportunity for attendees to meet, socialize and network.
The Symposium on Mines and the Environment is a result of a collaboration between the Research Institute on Mines and Environment of the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Polytechnique Montréal (RIME UQAT-Polytechnique), the Unité de recherche et de service en technologie minérale (URSTM) and many actors from government agencies and mining companies. Over the years, the Symposium as also been strongly supported by mining companies such as Agnico Eagle, Rio Tinto, IAMGOLD, Glencore, Canadian Malartic (formerly known as Osisko), Richmont Mines, Hecla Mining, Barrick Gold, BHP Billiton and many more.
The fifth edition of the Symposium will be held on June 14-15-16-17, 2015 in Rouyn-Noranda, Canada.
Some 250 to 300 attendees from all around the world but mainly from Canada are expected. Since the first edition in 2002, nearly a thousand have attended the Symposium, and it has continued to grow and prosper into a more significant event.
